TonyCooper > Florida Southern College, in Lakeland FL, is noted for the contributions of Frank Lloyd Wright. Several of the buildings were designed by Wright, and the college has continued to use Wright's themes of design and color as the college has grown.
TonyCooper > The William H. Danforth Chapel uses native Florida red cypress wood in the construction. The interior of the chapel (which was closed when I visited) includes pews and cushions made by FSC students in industrial arts and home economics classes.
TonyCooper > Behind the Danforth Chapel is the Annie Pfeiffer Chapel. It was constructed between 1939 and 1941, and is known on campus as "the bicycle rack in the sky" or "the bow tie".
TonyCooper > The blocks contain inserts of colored glass to admit light.
TonyCooper > The "bowtie" nickname comes from this, but the "bicycle rack" is a bird perch in this image.
TonyCooper > While the buildings soar into the sky, there's a constant feeling of the architecture blending into the ground and being an integral part of the landscape.
TonyCooper > My photographs don't do justice to the colors. The day was cloudy with intermittent rainshowers. The warmth of the building material doesn't come through.

TonyCooper > An example of the colored blocks of light-admitting glass.
TonyCooper > Florida weather! Heavy rain one minute, and the sun peeking out the next. Even after the rain, though, the water drips off.
TonyCooper > Even Wright couldn't design a way to eliminate standing water on the campus. Because this is Florida, though, the ground will quickly absorb the water.
TonyCooper > The campus maintenance staff have provided landscaping that enhances, but does not overwhelm, the view.
TonyCooper > The Missing Picture: The Water Dome, part of the esplanade that is the centerpiece of the campus, was inoperational when I visited. I've visited the campus three times, and never been there when the fountains were working. The original Water Dome was completed in 1948, but it was remodeled in the mid-60s because of the difficulty in maintaining the large pool. The original fountains have been removed.
It's supposed to be a spectacular feature, but I wouldn't know.
